4 Safe Ways To Get Ants Out Of Your Home

Posted on: 25 March 2021

As soon as spring starts, ants seem to make their way into homes. If you have an ant problem in your home, there are lots of safe ways you can battle the ants.

Safe Way #1: Get Rid of Food

If you want the ants to stay out of your home, you need to get rid of the food they like to eat. You can do this by making sure you don't have any readily accessible food, which is easier said than done, as ants enjoy tiny particles of food. You are going to want to keep all open food inside sealed containers or bags.

In the summer, you may want to consider moving sugary food or starch into your fridge to keep it safe.

Be on top of wiping up crumbs from your countertops and sweeping your floors. If you eat outside of your kitchen or dining room, be sure to vacuum around those areas, such as around your couch cushions.

Be careful with pet food, which can also attract ants. Feed your pets and remove the food when they are done eating to keep the pets away.

Safe Way #2: Seal Up Entry Points

The truth is ants are tiny, and they can squeeze through very small entry points. However, it doesn't hurt to look for ways that ants are getting into your home and see if you can seal them up. Look for little cracks near the base of your walls next to the floorboards and heaters; these are popular entry points for ants. Filling in these areas with sealants can help keep the ants out.

Be sure to check your window screens for rips as well. Ants like to crawl in near and around windows, so be sure those areas are sealed up.

Safe Way #3: Deal with Vegetation

Ants often make their way into your home by climbing on vegetation that is leaning up against your home. Trim your trees and bushes, so they don't touch your home. If you have any vines growing in your home, you will want to remove them as well. This can make it harder for ants to get into your home.

Safe Way #4: Boric Acid Poison

A safe way to poison both worker ants and their queen is with boric acid. You will want to mix up a small amount of boric acid with sugar and warm water and then soak cotton balls in the solution. Then, place the cotton balls in areas where you see ants in your home. You can also place the mixture out in small containers around your home. The ants will carry it back to their nests, and within a few weeks, your ant problem will be gone for good. Just be sure to wear gloves when handling this solution, and don't use them around pets or small children.

If your ants are too much for you to handle, call up a pest control company. A pest control company will use safe methods to provide you with timely ant removal
